The valley of the kings

About the Loire Valley

The Loire Valley between Sully-sur-Loire and Chalonnes, about 280 km of the middle Loire, was inscribed by UNESCO as a cultural landscape in 2000. Join us in the valley where François I built Chambord, where Chenonceau spans the Cher, and where Leonardo da Vinci spent his last years at Clos Lucé. We bring together the château days, wine tastings, bike rides and balloon flights that start in Paris, Tours and Amboise, and mark each with the tickets its fare includes. Start with the three below.

The Châteaux

Every château sells its own ticket on its own hours. Chambord charges €21 to EEA nationals and residents and €31 to everyone else in 2026, and admits under-18s free on an individual visit. Chenonceau costs €19 with a timed slot, Amboise €17.30 with a Histopad, and Villandry €14 for the château and gardens.

The Towns

Tours, Amboise, Blois, Chinon and Saumur all have a railway station, and they are where your days start. Tours holds the tourist office most shared days leave from, Amboise puts the royal château and Clos Lucé a short walk apart, and Chinon sits in the vineyards below its Royal Fortress.

The Wine

The middle Loire pours two grapes above all. Vouvray makes whites only, from Chenin Blanc, across seven communes at the edge of Tours. West of Tours the wine turns red: Chinon and Bourgueil grow Cabernet Franc, and Saumur's sparkling wine matures in cellars cut into tuffeau.

What you will see

Named Highlights of a Loire Valley Visit

The places these tours are built around, from Chambord in the east to the cellars of Vouvray outside Tours.

Château de Chambord

Château de Chambord was built from 1519 for François I, with a double-helix staircase whose two ramps never meet and a park inside a wall 32 km long.

Château de Chenonceau

Château de Chenonceau stands across the Cher on a row of arches, 34 km from Tours, with the gardens of Diane de Poitiers and Catherine de Médicis on either side.

Château Royal d'Amboise

The royal château sits on a spur above the Loire, and its Saint-Hubert chapel, built in 1493, holds the tomb of Leonardo da Vinci.

Clos Lucé

The manor in Amboise where Leonardo lived from 1516 until he died on 2 May 1519, with 20 life-size machines built from his drawings in the park.

Villandry's gardens

Villandry was built in 1532 and is visited for its gardens more than its rooms, the kitchen garden laid out in geometric beds and open all year.

The Vouvray cellars

Vouvray makes white wine only, from Chenin Blanc, in cellars dug into the chalk hillsides at the eastern edge of Tours.

Plan your visit

Everything You Need Before You Go

Each château sells its own ticket. Chambord costs €21 for EEA nationals and residents and €31 for everyone else; Chenonceau is €19 with a brochure and a timed slot it makes mandatory; Amboise is €17.30 with its Histopad. Chenonceau admits visitors until 19:00 in high summer and until 16:30 in winter.

See château prices and hours

The TGV from Paris Montparnasse reaches Saint-Pierre-des-Corps, on the edge of Tours, in about an hour. Amboise station is a 10-minute walk from its château, and Chenonceaux station is 400 m from the ticket office. Chenonceau to Chambord has no direct train, which is where a tour earns its fare.

Plan the journey

Most shared days from inside the valley meet at the Tours tourist office, 78-82 rue Bernard Palissy, at 9:00, or the Amboise tourist office at 9:30. Small-group days from Paris meet at 6 Avenue de Wagram, and private days collect you from your hotel.

See every starting point

Météo-France's 1991-2020 normals for Tours give highs of 26 °C in July and about 8 °C in January, with about 678 mm of rain a year. Balloons fly only in calm air at sunrise or sunset, and the gardens are fullest from late spring to autumn.

Straight answer

Do You Need a Tour for the Loire Valley?

To see one château, no. Loire Valley tickets are sold by each château on its own website, and Loire Valley ticket prices for 2026 run from €12.50 at the Chinon fortress to €21 or €31 at Chambord, depending on your passport. Amboise is a 10-minute walk from its station and Chenonceaux station is 400 m from the château, so one château by train is easy on your own.

What a tour adds is the road between them. Chenonceau to Chambord has no direct train, so two or three châteaux in a day, or a morning in the Vouvray cellars without driving after the tasting, is what the tours are for. Some fares put the château tickets in and others leave them to you, and every card says which.

Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a ticket to visit the Loire Valley?
No. The valley is a region with no gate, so there is no single ticket. You pay admission at each château you enter, and some tours put those tickets in the fare while others leave them to you.
How much do Loire Valley tours cost?
Shared tours run from about $33 for an hour on a Segway in Amboise to about $328 for a full day from Paris. Private days start at around $280 per person. Each card shows the current fare and whether château tickets are in it.
Which tours include château tickets?
The small-group days from Paris that visit Chambord, Chenonceau and Amboise, the Chambord and Chenonceau day from Tours or Amboise that lists both entrance fees, the Azay-le-Rideau and Villandry day, the private Chenonceau and Chambord day and the 2-day train trip all say so in their inclusions. Read the inclusions on the rest before you buy tickets twice.
Can you do a Loire Valley tour from Paris in a day?
Yes. The day tours from Paris run 10 to 13 hours, with about two and a half hours on the road each way, and fit in two or three châteaux. If that sounds long, the 2-day trip by train is the slower alternative.
What is the best base for tours in the valley?
Tours or Amboise. Most small-group château and wine days leave from their tourist offices in the morning, at 9:00 in Tours and 9:30 in Amboise, so you spend the day in the valley instead of on the motorway.
How much is Château de Chambord in 2026?
Château de Chambord charges €21 for nationals and residents of the European Economic Area and €31 for everyone else, a two-tier price it is trying for 2026. Under-18s on an individual visit enter free.
Do you need to book Chenonceau in advance?
Yes. Château de Chenonceau makes a timed-slot reservation mandatory, so choose your entry time when you buy. On a tour that includes the ticket, the operator books the slot for you.
Are Loire Valley wine tours suitable for children?
Most are not: the wine tours are sold for adults 18 and over. For a family, the Segway ride in Amboise takes riders from 12, and one balloon flight takes children from 6.
Can I cancel a tour booking?
Nearly every tour refunds in full if you cancel at least 24 hours before the start. The exception is the 2-day tour from Paris by train, which needs seven days' notice.
How many châteaux can you see in one day?
Two or three on a guided day. A two-château day gives you about two hours at each; three châteaux means closer to an hour or an hour and a half at each, with the drives in between.
Are there Loire Valley bike tours for beginners?
Yes. The Saumur and Chenonceau rides use e-bikes, which take the effort out of the hills, and the Chenonceau ride covers 36 km over four and a half hours including stops. The Chinon ride uses regular bikes.
When do balloon flights run?
At sunrise and in the early evening, in calm weather. The flight itself lasts about an hour inside an outing of three to four hours, including the setup and the landing.
Is lunch included on the day tours?
On some. The Chambord and Chenonceau day from Tours or Amboise includes lunch at Château de Villesavin, and the Vouvray and Chinon wine day, the private Chenonceau and wine day and the bike rides include lunch or a picnic. Several Paris days sell lunch as an option, so read the option you choose.
Can you get to the Loire Valley by train?
Yes. Villandry puts the high-speed train from Paris Montparnasse at 55 minutes, to Saint-Pierre-des-Corps or Tours. From there, regional trains serve Amboise and Blois, and most tours from Tours meet a short walk from the station.
Where do the tours from Tours meet?
Most meet in front of the Tours tourist office at 78 Rue Bernard Palissy, close to the railway station. Your confirmation gives the exact time and corner.

Three things for the hours around your visit. More are in things to do in the Loire Valley.

The Amboise market

The Amboise market fills the riverbank on Friday and Sunday mornings, 08:00 to 14:00, and the Sunday edition runs to more than 200 stalls.

Loire à Vélo

The Chaumont garden festival

The International Garden Festival at Chaumont-sur-Loire runs from 22 April to 1 November 2026, on the estate between Blois and Amboise.
